Let’s reflect on Sunday’s WORD:
Get FREE Pt. 1: FREE from SIN ******* John 8:31-38/1 Cor. 10:13
Get FREE! Pt. 2: FREE from CONDEMNATION ******* John 8:31-38/Romans 8:1-6
John 8:31-38 31 Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."  33 They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How is it that you say, `You will be made free'?"  34 Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not continue in the house for ever; the son continues for ever.  36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.  37 I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you.  38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father."
Romans 8:1-61 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of LIFE in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death.  3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.  5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.  6 To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is LIFE and peace.
His LAW had us DOOMED
-       None of us were/are able to keep the LAW (because of the “flesh”).  *As Paul is addressing the church in the book of Romans, he is sure to explain that by reason of the LAW we would all be condemned.  He starts with a statement of acquittal, but then sort of works backwards.  The truth here is that ALL of us would be condemned because ALL of us break God’s LAW.
-       The LAW leads to death…  *Paul explains that the LAW produces death because the consequences and penalty of breaking it is death.  The LAW was given and designed to help men live peaceably with each other and walk before the LORD.  His LAW wasn’t designed to restrict or limit us but to help us live FREE; HOWEVER, our sinful nature can’t keep it.  (See John 8:1-5 -1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple; all the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them.  3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst  4 they said to him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery.  5 Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such. What do you say about her?")
-          There is NO condemnation ONLY in Christ Jesus  *Paul starts this chapter off with the declaration that there is “no condemnation”, BUT this statement is not for everybody.  The declaration of liberty or acquittal is ONLY for those “who are in Christ Jesus.”
-          In Christ Jesus we are made FREE from the penalty of SIN…  *So those who are in Christ Jesus are then made FREE from the condemnation and punishment of SIN.  Death is what we deserve and would be sentenced to, BUT in Jesus that penalty is removed.
-          Jesus’ righteousness satisfies the demands of the LAW for us…
*Although, none of us are righteous and none of us can keep the law---Jesus came to die for us.  WE are not righteous, but we are made righteous through HIM.
-          Jesus has overcome SIN, death and the LAW…  *By coming into this world in flesh and living righteously according to the LAW he won the victory for us.  Although we are sinners and break the LAW, we can be declared “righteous” because of His righteousness---He kept the LAW.
