Let’s reflect on Sunday’s WORD:

Get FREE Pt. 1: FREE from SIN ******* John 8:31-38/1 Cor. 10:13
31 Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples,  32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."  33 They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How is it that you say, `You will be made free'?"  34 Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not continue in the house for ever; the son continues for ever.  36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.  37 I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you.  38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father."

13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

God wants us to be FREE
- Many of us are in bondage to many things…  *As people in this LIFE it is inevitable that we will find ourselves in bondage and incarcerated to some things…  Some to: addictions, relationships, eating, dead-end careers, depression, etc…
- God wants us to live FREE…  *Although we often live like captives, God desires our FREEdom.  We have been pronounced FREE, but not necessarily living into that FREEdom.

SIN has robbed our FREEdom...
- (v. 34) Sin can enslave and incarcerate us *Jesus is talking to these Jews about being liberated and they respond by telling the Master they “have never been in bondage…”  Many of us are just like them, we believe we can tell the Master what is right.  However, he tells them there is a bondage that they may not be aware of ---SIN!
- (v. 33) You can be in “bondage” to SIN and not know it… *Ironically, Jesus is telling them they can be FREE and they are boosting that they have never been bound.  Because they don’t know they are bound, they have no chance of being FREE.  In bondage to SIN and not knowing it:
* Rationalizing your SIN…  “I only do it because…”
* Comparing your SIN… “At least I’m not like so and so…”
* Redeeming your SIN… “There is nothing wrong with getting wasted if I’m responsible”
1 Cor. 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

SIN is a struggle for ALL of us
- YOU are not the only CHRISTIAN who SINS  *When we look to Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, he makes it plain that none of us can boast that we are the only ones who experience temptation.  ALL OF US are tempted to sin…  Jesus was tempted to SIN (Matthew 4:1-3 - 1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  2 And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry.  3 And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.")
-“God is faithful” even when we are not… * Paul says that in the face of temptation, GOD IS FAITHFUL!!!  The people of faith can always find solace in knowing WHATEVER we face, OUR GOD IS FAITHFUL!  God is not only faithful to deliver us from SIN, but He remains faithful when we have given in to SIN.

You can overcome SIN
-God doesn’t give us a test we can’t pass (with His help)  *Though we ALL struggle with various sins and sometimes it seems we cannot overcome, the Word declares all of our temptations can be overcome.
- Only the WORD can make us FREE!!!  *However, SIN has a strong power and is able to grab and grip us IF we let it.  There is no real way to overcome it except by the WORD of God.  (See John 14:6 - 6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the LIFE; no one comes to the Father, but by me.)

LIFE Kudos: Special Kudos this week goes to all of the Education Team…  As we are preparing to launch a new year, I thank God for you efforts to jump us off in a spirit of excellence.  I am asking all of us to recommit ourselves to Christian Education in this coming year and it will help us all to develop and grow in the LORD.  Thanks for preparing the table and blazing this trail Education Team!!!
