WLGTDWI (What’s LOVE Got to Do With IT?) Pt.1 ******* John 13:34-35
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.  35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
-       WLGTDWI The song – Tina Turner…
"What's Love Got To Do With It"
You must understand
That the touch of your hand
Makes my pulse react
That it's only the thrill
Of boy meeting girl
Opposites attract
It's physical
Only logical
You must try to ignore
That it means more than that
Oh what's love got to do, got to do with it
What's love but a second hand emotion
What's love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart
When a heart can be broken
WE are commanded to LOVE (v. 34a)
-       Jesus states this as a COMMANDMENT… *As Jesus begins to address His disciple on this LOVE issue, it is important to notice that He refers to this as a COMMANDMENT!  This is not suggested, nor is it optional---it’s A NEW COMMANDMENT…
-       Those who follow Christ must LOVE each other…  *WE know we have this commandment to LOVE, but what does LOVE look like???  What is LOVE…???: (1): strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties <maternal love for a child> (2): attraction based on sexual desire: affection and tenderness felt by lovers (3): affection based on admiration, benevolence, or common interests <love for his old schoolmates>  3b: warm attachment, enthusiasm, or devotion <love of the sea> 3c: the object of attachment, devotion, or admiration <baseball was his first love>  4a: unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another: as (1): the fatherly concern of God for humankind (2): brotherly concern for others b: a person's adoration of God…
WE have an example of LOVE (v. 34b)
-       “even as I have…” – Christ LOVED/LOVES us… *As Jesus is sharing with His disciples this LOVE lesson, He tells them to LOVE as He has loved…
-       “even as I have…” – Christ is our example of LOVE… *In knowing that Jesus loves us, he also says that His LOVE should be the blueprint or pattern by which we LOVE.  HOW DID HE LOVE THEM?
* He used them (in spite of their status)
* he called simple men (Mark 1:16-20 -16 And passing along by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men." 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him.  19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.  20 And immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and followed him.)
* he called sinner men (Mark 2:13-14 - 13 He went out again beside the sea; and all the crowd gathered about him, and he taught them. 14 And as he passed on, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, "Follow me." And he rose and followed him.)
            * He prayed for them (John 17 – “LORD, make them one…”)
* He fed them (Mark 8:1-9 - 1 In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him, and said to them, 2 "I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days, and have nothing to eat; 3 and if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come a long way." 4 And his disciples answered him, "How can one feed these men with bread here in the desert?"  5 And he asked them, "How many loaves have you?" They said, "Seven."  6 And he commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground; and he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd.  7 And they had a few small fish; and having blessed them, he commanded that these also should be set before them.  8 And they ate, and were satisfied; and they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full.  9 And there were about four thousand people.
            * He forgave them (Mark 16:7 – Go tell my disciples, and Peter…)
WE are identified by our LOVE (v. 35)
-       IF we LOVE, all men when know our connection to CHRIST
*Jesus tells the disciples that they MUST love because this will be their identification badge of being his followers.  (See the church at Antioch – Act 11:26 - and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church, and taught a large company of people; and in Antioch the disciples were for the first time called Christians.)
-       IF we are connected to HIM there should be some resemblance… * As people of faith we must know that LOVE is what connects us to GOD for “God is LOVE” (1 John 4:8 - He who does not love does not know God; for God is love.)
LIFE Kudos: Special Kudos this week goes Jaleesa Washington…  I want to make sure it is known that is was the brain child of Jaleesa to have a “Mixtape Concert.”  Jaleesa sent me an email a while back explaining her idea to have a concert where we performed songs from the Betta LIFE Mixtape…  I thought the idea was amazing and I believe the concert for LIFE Night was awesome…  Thank you Jaleesa for sharing your vision with our church and I pray the concert was as awesome in your eyes as it was in mine…
